Grading Process

step 1

Nostalgium: Receiving

When a submission is received, Nostalgium representatives compare and confirm the contents, order number, and packing list. The cards are then entered into our system for tracking purposes, and the customer is promptly informed about the submission's arrival and departure status.

step 2

Nostalgium: Shipping

Nostalgium sends cards to CGC in consolidated batches. During the batching process, we meticulously record the submission/ certification number of all customer items to guarantee the accurate return of the designated card(s). Once this information is logged, the cards are then dispatched to CGC Trading Cards.

step 3

CGC: Receiving

When a submission is received, it is opened by trained CGC staff under security cameras and immediately checked against the submission paperwork. The submission is then entered into CGC’s proprietary tracking system with the assigned submission number.

step 4

CGC: Verification

Each card gets a more detailed review to confirm that its description matches the information provided by the submitter. A unique ID and barcode are assigned to track the card throughout the CGC Cards grading process. At this stage, the card is separated from the submission paperwork so that the CGC Cards graders don’t know the submitter’s identity. This helps to ensure complete impartiality.

step 5

CGC: Authentication

Cards are stored in CGC Cards’ vault until they are ready to be reviewed for authenticity. If a card is determined to be genuine, it will be graded according to the market-friendly CGC Cards Grading Scale. Note: A card will be rejected for grading if it is of questionable authenticity.

step 6

CGC: Grading

Card grading is a team effort, with multiple CGC Cards professionals examining every card aided by advanced technology, ensuring the highest level of accuracy and consistency. Each grader enters their grade into CGC Cards’ proprietary system. A consensus is then reached on the final grade of the card.

step 7

CGC: Encapsulation

After grading, the card and a label bearing its description, grade, certification number and a QR code are inserted into a CGC Cards holder, which is crystal-clear and provides superior long-term protection.

step 8

CGC: Imaging

CGC Cards images all graded cards after encapsulation. To check the legitimacy of a CGC-certified card, these images are available to view 24/7 on the CGC Cards website using the Verify CGC Certification tool.

step 9

CGC: Quality Control

A CGC Cards Quality Control Specialist carefully inspects the card, label and holder. All of the certification details are reviewed for accuracy, and the holder is checked for any defects or contaminants

step 10

CGC: Packaging and Shipping

Encapsulated cards are individually counted and checked against the original submission paperwork. Cards are then securely packaged in a sturdy cardboard box with protective packaging materials. The CGC-certified cards are now ready to be sent back to the submitter.

step 11

Nostalgium: Receiving

Once returned to Nostalgium, the customer will receive an e-mail with a link to their grades. If Nostalgium has interest in acquiring the cards directly from the customer, the email will include a purchase offer, and the cards will be securely stored in a designated section of our inventory. In the absence of an offer, the cards will proceed directly to the shipping phase.

What if my slab comes back damaged?

Nostalgium will work with CGC to remedy any defects the graded card may be returned with. That includes damaged slabs, misaligned cards, and incorrect labeling. Nostalgium is not responsible for the grades assigned to individual cards.

How can I ensure that my cards aren’t mistaken for others?

We separate cards that belong to each customer from those that belong to Nostalgium before our batching process even begins. Cards owned by customers are tracked on a separate ledger to ensure we have collector numbers identified before the cards are sent to CGC. We will never split an order from a single customer into multiple batches (unless the size of the single customer’s collection calls for it).

Why grade through CGC?

We prefer CGC for a few reasons:

  • Their cases are both lightweight and durable.
  • Cards fit perfectly in the mold with no room for movement.
  • The labels are large which allow for detailed card descriptions.
  • Faster turnaround times.
  • CGC is established in many key collectible marketplaces.
